Solar and stellar measurements using accurate spectroscopic techniques
We propose to use low-cost optics equipment in order to (1) generate a Hertzsprung-Russell diagram for the 24 brightest stars visible in Beaumont, (2) analyze the polarization of stellar and solar light and the effect a telescope's optics have on these measurements, and (3) analyze the absorption spectrum due to Earth’s atmosphere on the Sun’s blackbody radiation spectrum.
متن کاملThe Champ Extended Stellar Survey (chess): Photometric and Spectroscopic Properties of Serendipitously Detected Stellar X-ray Sources
We present 348 X-ray emitting stars identified from correlating the Extended Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP), a wide-area serendipitous survey based on archival X-ray images, with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We use morphological star/galaxy separation, matching to an SDSS quasar catalog, an optical color-magnitude cut, and X-ray data quality tests to create our catalog, the Cha...
متن کاملUsing brain stimulation to disentangle neural correlates of conscious vision
Research into the neural correlates of consciousness (NCCs) has blossomed, due to the advent of new and increasingly sophisticated brain research tools. Neuroimaging has uncovered a variety of brain processes that relate to conscious perception, obtained in a range of experimental paradigms. But methods such as functional magnetic resonance imaging or electroencephalography do not always afford...
متن کاملClassification of Stellar Spectral Data Using SVM
In this paper a new technique is developed on stellar spectral classification. Because stellar spectral data sets are usually extremely noisy, wavelet de-noising method is proposed to reduce noise first. Then the support vector machines (SVM) is used for the classification. Experimental results show that in most cases, there will be a better performance using this composite classifier than usin...
متن کاملSpectroscopic Constraints on the Stellar Population of Elliptical Galaxies in the Coma Cluster
Near-IR spectra for a sample of 31 elliptical galaxies in the Coma cluster are obtained. The galaxies are selected to be ellipticals (no lenticulars), with a large spatial distribution, covering both the core and outskirt of the cluster (ie. corresponding to regions with large density contrasts). COsp (2.3 μm) absorption indices], measuring the contribution from intermediate-age red giant and s...
